Roy Orbison - I Drove All Night

I Drove All Night by Roy Orbison, Music Video, Lyrics and Review

I Drove All Night” is a song written by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly for Roy Orbison.
Orbison first recorded the song in 1987, but his rendition was not released until 1992, well after the song had become a top-ten hit on both sides of the Atlantic for Cyndi Lauper in 1989.

Roy Orbison - I Drove All Night Lyrics

I had to escape , the city was sticky and cruel
Maybe I should have called you first
But I was dying to get to you

I was dreaming while I drove
The long straight road ahead
Uh-huh, yeah

Could taste your sweet kisses, your arms open wide
This fever for you was just burning me up inside

I drove all night to get to you
Is that all right?
I drove all night, crept in your room
Woke you from your sleep to make love to you
Is that all right?
I drove all night

What in this world keeps us from falling apart?
No matter where I go
I hear the beating of our one heart
I think about you when the night is cold and dark
Uh-huh, yeah

No one can move me the way that you do
Nothing erases this feeling between me and you
I drove all night to get to you
Is that all right?

I drove all night, crept in your room
Woke you from your sleep to make love to you
Is that all right?
I drove all night

Could taste your sweet kisses, your arms open wide
This fever for you was just burning me up inside

I drove all night to get to you
Is that all right?
I drove all night, crept in your room
Is that all right?
I drove all night

Roy Orbison - I Drove All Night Review and Song Info

In 1992, Jeff Lynne remixed Orbison’s recordings of 1987 for the posthumous album King of Hearts, released the same year by Virgin Records. The song was a significant hit in the United Kingdom, reaching #7 on the country’s national singles chart. King of Hearts and “I Drove All Night” were generally well-received in the United States, returning Orbison to the Billboard charts and receiving a Grammy Award.

A music video featuring Jason Priestley and Jennifer Connelly was also made for the single. Somewhat unusual for its time the video was very simplistic, consisting primarily of various shots of the two actors driving and kissing.

The song has been covered by Pinmonkey (2002) and Céline Dion (2003).
