Marvin Gaye - Sexual Healing Lyrics
Ooh, now let’s get down tonight
Baby I’m hot just like an oven
I need some lovin’
And baby, I can’t hold it much longer
It’s getting stronger and stronger
And when I get that feeling
I want Sexual Healing
Sexual Healing, oh baby
Makes me feel so fine
Helps to relieve my mind
Sexual Healing baby, is good for me
Sexual Healing is something that’s good for me
Whenever blue tear drops are falling
And my emotional stability is leaving me
There is something I can do
I can get on the telephone and call you up baby, and
Honey I know you’ll be there to relieve me
The love you give to me will free me
If you don’t know the things you’re dealing
I can tell you, darling, that it’s Sexual Healing
Get up, Get up, Get up, Get up, let’s make love tonight
Wake up, Wake up, Wake up, Wake up, ‘cos you do it right
Baby I got sick this morning
A sea was storming inside of me
Baby I think I’m capsizing
The waves are rising and rising
And when I get that feeling
I want Sexual Healing
Sexual Healing is good for me
Makes me feel so fine, it’s such a rush
Helps to relieve the mind, and it’s good for us
Sexual Healing, baby, is good for me
Sexual Healing is something that’s good for me
And it’s good for me and it’s good to me
My baby ohhh
Come take control, just grab a hold
Of my body and mind soon we’ll be making it
Honey, oh we’re feeling fine
You’re my medicine open up and let me in
Darling, you’re so great
I can’t wait for you to operate
I can’t wait for you to operate
When I get this feeling, I need Sexual Healing
Marvin Gaye - Sexual Healing Review and Info
Released off his seminal 1982 album, Midnight Love, the song not only became his biggest hit in five years, but also brought Gaye back to the top of the pop music world five years after his last big hit, “Got to Give It Up”.
By holding the #1 spot on the Billboard R&B charts for ten weeks, it was the longest running #1 R&B single of the 1980s. “Sexual Healing” eventually hit #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart in January 1983. It also became an international and global hit reaching #4 on the UK pop singles chart giving Gaye his first UK Top 10 hit in five years since “Got to Give It Up”.
Furthermore, the single garnered him his first Gold certificate by RIAA for sales of over a million copies (it has since been certified platinum by the RIAA) and finally won Gaye, after being nominated for a Grammy no less than 11 times in his career, the first Grammy Awards of his multi-dimensional career, winning him Best Male R&B Vocal Performance of 1982 and Best R&B Instrumental of 1982. It also won him his first American Music Award for Favorite Soul/R&B Single.
The song was later ranked #231 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
The music and lyrics were composed by Gaye, David Ritz and Odell Brown. The song discussed a man’s aching for finding sexual salvation with his woman - hence the title “Sexual Healing”. According to Ritz, when he interviewed Gaye for an autobiography, he noticed comic book pornography in Marvin’s room and mentioned to the singer that he “needed sexual healing” causing Gaye to tell Ritz to write a poem, after noting the rough draft of Ritz’s lyrics, Gaye wrote his share of the lyrics and recorded the song while in Ohain, Belgium. The final mix was recorded in Waterloo, Belgium, the site where Gaye addressed CBS Records executives about the song. Some saw the song as Marvin’s harmonious plea to sex in the form of him preaching the word of gospel, marrying his divided soul.
